Creating a professional pull-up <a href="https://www.printulu.co.za/product/banners" class="internal-link text-[#007756] hover:text-[#005d42] underline font-medium">banner</a> in Adobe Illustrator is simpler than you think. You'll need the right document setup, quality assets, and attention to print specifications. Let's walk through each step to get your banner <a href="/blog/print-ready-file-guide" class="internal-link text-[#007756] hover:text-[#005d42] underline font-medium">print-ready</a>.

Start by setting up your document correctly. Check out Printulu's Pull-up Banner options to choose your size — this determines your artboard dimensions.

We offer three sizes:

  • 1150 x 200cm
  • 285 x 200cm
  • 3120 x 200cm

Today we'll design the standard 85 x 200cm banner.

Import And Set Up Your Pull Up Banner Design File#

Working from our template makes life easier for Printulu's banners (download it here). Once you've opened the template in Illustrator, verify your document settings are spot on.

Here's what you need:

Document Presets: Print Width: 85 cm Height: 200 cm Orientation: Horizontal Artboards: 1 (our pull-up banners are single-sided) Bleed: 5 mm on all sides (that's the red line around your artboard)

Advanced Options: Colour Mode: <a href="/blog/clusters/artwork-prep" class="internal-link text-[#007756] hover:text-[#005d42] underline font-medium">CMYK</a> Colour Raster Effects: High (300ppi)

<AcademyProTip>Can't see the bleed marks? Go to View > Guides > Show Guides to make those red borders visible.</AcademyProTip>

Add Your Logo File#

Go to File > Place > select your logo file.

Your logo should be a vector graphic. Don't accept small .jpg or .png files from clients — they'll compromise your project quality, and that reflects on you as the designer. If you're stuck with these formats, ensure they're large enough that you won't need to stretch them. Pull-up banners are large format prints, so high-quality imagery isn't negotiable.

Insert Your Details#

Design according to your brand specifications and identity. Include your services or key information in quick, legible bullet points. Skip the long paragraphs — nobody's reading War and Peace on a banner.

Font Size: Nothing smaller than 8pt, but you'll likely go bigger. Remember, people need to read this from a distance.

Embed Your Text#

Transform your text into outlines by going to Type > Create Outlines or using ⇧⌘O. You can also select text, right-click, and choose Create Outlines. This embeds the font by turning letters into shapes. Your text won't disappear during printing — guaranteed.

Save Your File For Print#

Export as a .pdf with high quality print preset. Select marks and bleed when exporting to ensure bleed marks save into your final PDF.

Steps: File > Save a copy > High Quality Print > Deselect "Preserve editing capabilities" > Under "Marks & Bleeds" select trim marks & use document bleed settings > Save PDF.

<AcademyDadJoke>Why did the designer break up with their banner? Because it had too many issues with commitment... to the bleed area!</AcademyDadJoke>
