How To Apply Your Printed Custom Vinyl Stickers In 4 Easy Steps#

Applying vinyl stickers perfectly comes down to four simple steps: clean your surface with soap and water, work in moderate temperatures (18-25°C), use masking tape for positioning, and try the wet method for larger stickers.

Here's the quick breakdown:

 • 1Step 1: Clean the surface with a light solution of soap and water
 • 2Step 2: Apply your stickers when temperatures are moderate (18 – 25 degrees)
 • 3Step 3: Use masking tape to keep your vinyl in place
 • 4Step 4: Use the wet method for big block vinyls

So you've just ordered your vinyl stickers with Printulu. They're beautiful, and you can't wait to put them up. But once you try to do it yourself, you turn the stickers into a crumpled mess. What a waste!

Many people ask if we apply the stickers for our clients. Unfortunately, we don't – at least not yet! Our senior designer can talk you through the process though, as she's applied thousands of stickers over the years.

If you're tackling this yourself, here's a tutorial that's proven super helpful and aligns with what the professionals did at our office.

Step 1: Clean The Surface#

Pre-wash the area where you'll be applying the sticker using either soap and water or a mixture of rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol) and water. After cleaning with soapy water, rinse thoroughly until no soap or residue remains.

Skip the window-cleaning products. They may leave residue behind, making your sticker cling less effectively.

Step 2: Apply Your Stickers When Temperatures Are Moderate#

For the best results, install your stickers in a shaded area away from direct sunlight and wind. Wind will blow dust particles under your vinyl and result in uneven application. When possible, you should apply stickers when the temperature is above 18°C and below 25°C.

Step 3: Use Masking Tape (Dry method)#

This is super difficult and we recommend leaving it to the professionals. Masking tape can help ensure that your sticker is positioned precisely where you want it.

Leave the white backing paper in place and facing the surface you're applying it to, then set the sticker where you want it to go. Place a piece of masking tape along the top edge of the sticker—this fixes it in the proper location. Then, lift the sticker as if it's on a hinge, and peel off the backing paper. While holding onto the bottom edge, slowly lower the sticker, using your thumb to press from the centre out and gradually working from top to bottom.

Step 4: Use The Wet Method (Better for a novice)#

You can apply most smaller decals without using water, but for large and very large stickers, this trick is a life-saver. After cleaning your surface area, wet the area again using a spray bottle and a solution of about 5% soap / 95% water.

Apply the sticker while the area is still wet. This will keep it from adhering immediately and give you time to re-position if necessary. It also lets you remove any bubbles using a squeegee or plastic card. The soapy water will dry in a few minutes and leave your sticker firmly affixed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply vinyl stickers without bubbles?

Clean the surface thoroughly with soap and water, then use the wet method: spray a 5% soap/95% water solution on the surface, apply the sticker while wet, and use a squeegee or plastic card to push out bubbles from center to edges. The soapy water evaporates in minutes, leaving a firm bond.

What temperature is best for applying stickers?

Apply stickers in moderate temperatures between 18-25 degrees Celsius. Avoid direct sunlight and windy conditions. Wind blows dust particles under the vinyl, causing uneven application. Work in a shaded area for the best results.

How do I apply large vinyl stickers?

For large stickers, always use the wet method. Clean the surface, spray with soapy water solution, position the sticker while wet (this allows repositioning), then use a squeegee to remove water and bubbles from center outward. The wet method prevents immediate adhesion, giving you time to get perfect placement.

How long do custom vinyl stickers last outdoors?

Quality vinyl stickers with proper application can last 3-5 years outdoors. UV-resistant laminated stickers last longer. For temporary promotions, standard vinyl works well. For permanent outdoor signage, consider Chromadek or ABS boards with printed graphics.

Can I remove and reapply vinyl stickers?

Standard vinyl stickers are designed for permanent application and cannot be cleanly removed and reapplied. For removable options, request static cling vinyl or repositionable adhesive stickers. These work well on glass surfaces and smooth walls.
