However, there are common mistakes that can be made that can result in a poor outcome. Here are 5 of the top mistakes to avoid when printing stickers.

1. Too Small Font Size

2. Dark colours for One-way vision sticker or contravision vinyl

3. Installing your stickers incorrectly

4. Too much fine detail

5. Not understanding Transparent Vinyl Rules

With over 4 years in Large Format, I know a lot about stickers (We have had a close relationship resulting in an understanding that runs deeper than the Vredefort Crater). Let’s break these common mistakes down for you in order for you to get the best out of your sticker printing.

1. Too Small Font Size

The Printulu rule is that the minimum font size for stickers is 8pt. Anything below that will not be readable. Due to the fact that we print with UV ink, the end result is a bit grainy and the small font will not legible.

2. Dark colours for one-way vision sticker or contravision vinyl

A lot of clients I have worked for choose to have a dark background because they like the look of it. But liking is not necessarily practical. The more ink used on the vinyl, the more likely it is to lift. Also, white backgrounds can’t fade thus a lighter design will last you longer.

3. Installing your stickers incorrectly

The most important rule is to use a clean surface. You can read all about how to apply a sticker here. Installing a sticker is difficult, I’ve done it for over 4 years and it’s just a tricky business. If you have a super clean surface then the rest is do-able. If your surface is oily then you will end up throwing away the vinyl.

4. Too much fine detail

Say it with me, Less is more. Don’t overcrowd your vinyl unless it is for “legal” purposes. You only have less than 3 seconds to grab a potential client’s attention. Don’t waste it. Remember, UV printing lasts longer but appears more grainy. Thus bigger is better therefore less is more.

5. Not understanding Transparent Vinyl Rules

Transparent vinyl only works in one of two circumstances. The first is dark ink printed on transparent vinyl. The second is when white ink printing is involved. Printulu does not offer white ink printing, not yet anyway!
A transparent sticker can be used on off-white product containers OR on windows if you want to make it more difficult for someone to see in but not impossible.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can ensure that your stickers will look great and effectively promote your business, product, or event.

Here are some guidelines to help you design effective stickers:

  1. Keep it simple: A simple design is often more effective than a complex one. Stick to a limited colour palette and use simple shapes and icons to convey your message.
  2. Use high-quality images: The quality of the image is crucial for a good-looking sticker. Make sure that the image file is high resolution and that the image is clear and not pixelated or blurry.
  3. Consider the size: The size of the sticker can make a big difference in the overall look and impact. Consider the size of the sticker in relation to the space where it will be placed. At Printulu we do not offer stickers smaller than 5 x 5cm.
  4. Use contrast: Use contrasting colours to make the design stand out and be easily readable.
  5. Be consistent with branding: If your sticker is for a business or organization, use consistent branding, including colours and typography to ensure that it aligns with the business’s overall branding.
  6. Proofread and test print: Always proofread the text and test print the design before ordering. This will allow you to catch any errors or mistakes in the design before it is printed. You can test print it to scale at home on your plain old printer to ensure that everything looks fine.
  7. Think about the application: How and where the sticker will be applied should be considered when designing. For example, if the sticker will be applied to a curved surface, keep that in mind when creating the design. Curved items usually require a customised die.

By following these guidelines, you can be sure that your stickers will be effective, eye-catching and align with your brand. Order your stickers here and brighten up your brand instantly.
